Class,
Since we are in this program to become nursing educators, it is a good idea to look at things not only from a nursing perspective, but also from an educational perspective. In our nursing courses, we learned a lot about cultural competency in nursing. It is a topic in almost every class, and that is good because it is an important subject. However, in our nursing courses, the focus is on how to work with our patients and their families. As nurses we come into contact with people from every possible culture, and we must learn to relate to them without offending them. We can understand the need for covering this topic.
However, as nursing educators, it is still an important topic to cover. Therefore, in this class we are going to look at cultural competence from an educational standpoint. The next few blogs will be based on the website "How is cultural competence integrated into education". This site takes this subject and explores how it can be incorporated into the educational system, and how this can then make a difference. I would like everyone to take some time to review the site, and then comment on it. It has many parts, and can be explored a section at a time. Let me know what you think. Which part do you feel is the most important? How do you think this information can be related to the nursing educator? At our next blog, I will comment on your comments, and share some of my thoughts about this site as well. I look forward to your comments.
Here is the website, enjoy!

More about Culture
Hello again class!
I hope you have had time to review the material we covered earlier in class. I wanted to take this time to share a few thoughts with you. As a nurse, I have had to work with people from many different cultures, and I have always found it a very enjoyable task. However, it does have its challenges. The more people you come into contact with, the more chances there are for there to be misunderstandings. In our class we are going to be looking at why we need to be aware of the various cultures of our students. However, before we do that, we should take a look at how we as a class feel about the need for cultural competence. I have included a link to a survey here at the bottom of this blog. Please take the time to complete it. It is only 4 questions, but they should give me some idea of what you think of how culture affects the classroom. Once I have had the chance to analyze the results, I will let you know what they were, and how we will proceed from here on. Thanks in advance!

Hello all!
Welcome to the class blog site! This is the place where we can continue our classroom discussions with a little less formality. However, please be aware and observe the rules of netiquette! We want this to be a positive experince for everyone. I hope this will become a place where I can share more things that I have discovered which might be of help in guiding you to become the type of teacher who is sensitive to the needs of all students. I also want to hear from you via your posts and comments. Please feel free to share your thoughts about the information that you will see here. I hope that by blogging we can become better aquainted with each other, and the topic at hand. In addition to writing information, I hope to be able to share videos, websites, and other fun things! Lets make this a great experience for all!
